Traveling through the newest subsea tunnel in the Faroes, we arrive at Sandoy, where tales of legend and history accompany our drive from village to village. In the afternoon, we return toward Tórshavn with a stop at Kirkjubøur—the country’s most important historical site. Here, we visit the nearly 900-year-old Roykstovan farmhouse and Ólav’s Church, built in AD 1111 and dedicated to King Olav the Holy. Remarkably, this is the oldest church still in use in the Faroe Islands.
Wednesday
Today’s excursion takes you into the very heart of the Faroe Islands, with visits to the charming villages of Saksun, Tjørnuvík, and Gjógv. In Saksun, discover a tranquil seawater lagoon framed by dramatic mountains and visit the picturesque old church. Continuing to Tjørnuvík, you will be captivated by its black-sand beach, embraced by towering peaks and offering breathtaking views of the sea stacks Risin & Kellingin—the Giant and the Hag—said in legend to have once tried to drag the Faroe Islands to Iceland.
From there, the journey passes beneath Slættaratindur, the highest mountain in the Faroes, before arriving at Gjógv, a delightful village named after its striking natural gorge. Here, enjoy a leisurely lunch and take time to wander through the village, soaking in its peaceful atmosphere and beauty. Along the way, you will also witness Fossá, the country’s highest waterfall, cascading dramatically down the mountainside
